An Elwood bookshop that combines a love for the written word and a penchant for sharp design and beautiful homewares – there’s nothing to be grumpy about here. Despite its small size, The Grumpy Swimmer customers return time and time again for the carefully curated range of titles and friendly staff. Having built a warm community of book-lovers through their book club, poetry readings and storytelling nights, the store is a delight for regulars and newcomers alike
Clifford Posner – a well-known bookseller lived in Elwood in the early 1980s, near the St Kilda Botanical Gardens. He returned in 2009 to open his bookstore, The Grumpy Swimmer (Clifford is a Brighton Iceberger), now an Ormond Road institution. Ormond Road village was just starting to emerge from its slumber as I had at least three locations to choose from. Empty shops are now no longer around for very long as new retailers move in quickly, making Elwood a desirable shopping strip. Almost all shops are owner operated and I find this adds to the sense of community. As a gift and bookshop we are well supported by locals who not only buy from us but also take part in our bookclub and other events.
