Geelong’s forty five million dollar library and heritage centre (The Dome) is a much loved addition to the city’s cultural and architectural landscape. The spectacular dome abuts Johnstone Park, the 1926 Geelong Peace Memorial and the Geelong Art Gallery in the civic and cultural heart of the city. The dome is clad with a geodesic tile array of 332 hexagons in 19 different sizes arranged around a single pentagon. The tiles are coloured in a palette of four muted browns that complement the adjacent Peace Memorial and are graded in a heat map pattern to accentuate the crest of the dome. From the bright orange decor of the top floor (each level is coded in technicolour bursts), it has spectacular views across Corio Bay, out to the You Yangs and on a clear day across to Melbourne’s skyline. Famous for it’s six metre high ‘Great Wall of Stories’, it’s so easy to get lost in books for hours.
