Affectionately known by locals as the QVB, the Queen Victoria Building was designed by George McRae and completed in 1898, replacing the original Sydney markets. The elaborate Romanesque architecture was planned for the grand building so that in a time of a severe recession the Government could employ many craftsmen, stonemasons, plasterers and stained window artists who were out of work. The most striking feature within the QVB is the majestic centre dome, beautiful stained glass windows and the original 19th century staircase. The QVB occupies the entire block on Sydney’s George Street and has quickly became Sydney’s most popular and prestigious shopping centre with over 180 of Sydney’s finest fashion boutiques, jewellery and homeware shops, cafes and restaurants.
